Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Summary
Timothy Sykes turned $12,000 of Bar Mitzvah gift money into $1.65 million by trading thousands of stocks from 1999 to 2002. He managed the number-one Short Bias Hedge Fund from 2003 to 2006, starred in the television documentary Wall Street Warriors, and appeared regularly on CNBC - all before the age of 26. It's been a wild ride.
This Rocky-like story is the first realistic look at the world of stock trading and hedge funds. It will educate and inspire everyone.
Critic reviews
"There's certainly a dash of Holden Caulfield to Sykes, but there's at least an equal part Larry Livingston, the trader in Edwin LeFevre's classic Reminiscences of a Stock Operator." ( Dow Jones Newswire)
"A clearly written account of a natural trader coming of age, a Catcher in the Rye for traders. Highly recommended if you want to be or understand a trader." (Aaron C. Brown, Executive Director at Morgan Stanley and author of The Poker Face of Wall Street)

Don't buy a used car from this guy.
There is a lot of interesting insights into how the hedge fund business works in here, (or at least how it worked ten years ago), but there's also an awful lot of self-mythologizing that makes one wonder if Sykes is ultimately more interested in being well known than he is in trading, or running a fund. Having finished the book, I'm still not sure I know how best to acquire investors for a fund.
I don't want to seem too harsh - there is a lot good material in here for finance buffs. But there's also a lot of talk about wild parties he attended, TV shows he was on, and how he was a legend in his college dorm. Stories like how he bullied his roommate into moving out so he could have more space, which leave one wondering if it's a coincidence that the "passion for public education about finance" he cites as the reason he wrote this book, might have been discovered only after his fund failed to take off.
Still worth a listen if you're interested in the field.

Was great until I visited his YouTube channel
I like bios that are based on truth, or mostly truth. The story here is told well, and there certainly are elements of truth like he really was on TV, but it lost a lot of credibility when I came across his YouTube videos . Especially one where he shows a drawer full of money to impress potential students. To me he looked just like one of those fake get rich quick gurus, trying to sell you a cute story to get you to sign up.
Beside that, it is an entertaining read if you enjoy reading stock market stories and don't care about the proportion of fact to fiction.

Ok but something is missing
This book is hugely entertaining. Timothy's story is interesting, honest and well told. The problem with this book is that it misses the authors purpose and goal. You will learn about a few trading techniques but the book is not detailed enough to help you really understand the concepts of these trading tactics and sadly you will not learn what exactly a Hedge Fund is. Recommended if you have a little background knowledge.

Your Very Own Big Brother of the Stock Market
Where does An American Hedge Fund rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the top 5
What was one of the most memorable moments of An American Hedge Fund?
That he was a millionaire by 21 years of age and the realization for the first time in my life that I can become financially independent!
What does Brett Barry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Emotion, Passion, Clarity
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Didn't really think about it that way. I listen often when I'm at work or doing other tasks, so I listen to as much as I can. If I don't finish, I return to it at a later time. In fact I think I still have a couple of chapters yet to finish!
Any additional comments?
Love the Book, Love the Education.....it's really like having a mentor to learn about real-life mistakes and mishaps before they happen or when they happen. I'm so much calmer and confident about investing for the first time in my life. I'm 52!

A wild ride, got me back into investing
I really enjoyed this book. Tim's honesty and humor really carried the day. I did learn quite a bit about trading, not the "how to's" -- there are plenty of resources out there for that -- but the mind set. His honest assessment of his accomplishments and mistakes is well done. Tim never misses a chance to poke fun at himself, and he also never misses a chance to brag -- although he pulls them both off in a light way. Bretty Barry does a excellent job reading the book. Highly reccommend.

Fun to listen to but...
It was a fun read but nothing of particular help. A great story of a young boy at the right time to ride a wave of the stock market not seen since 1928. He didn't loose it so that is quite the accomplishment but he has not been able to do much since. Still young and still a little full of himself but it seems that LIFE is still working its magic on him. It will be fun to see what he does next.
Not recommended for trading advice. It's still a fun ego trip story. Don't come here for trading advice. He's still not sure how he got here.

Inquiring novice investors want to know
What I disliked was the slow start. When you’re starting out, having no clue about the terminology and etc., just thirsty forInvestor do’s and don’ts. A persons 6 hr life story is not exactly appealing. However, the progression of events that led up to the purpose for which the book was written, made a world of difference. For staunch bookworms with an interest in finance, preferably hedge fund management, I would indeed recommend this book.
