Summary
This publisher's pack contains Society (book three) and Hope (book four) of the After It Happened series.
Society, book three:
Set in the UK in the immediate aftermath of a mysterious illness which swept the country and left millions dead, the series follows the trials facing a reluctant hero, Dan, and the group he forms around him. They must battle the elements, find sufficient supplies and equipment to survive, and protect themselves against the most destructive force on the planet: other people.
The survivors have prospered, but their home is an enticing prospect for others to take. Besieged, they must respond with a savagery to dissuade further attempts.
Is this the end of society?
Hope, book four:
In the aftermath of the shocking revelations about the propagation of the human race, Dan latches on to a desperate chance to change the future which many have accepted. The group splits and Dan leads his closest allies on an uncertain journey to find a solution. They find themselves battling against the elements, against new foes, and above all, against time.
They must succeed.
They must have hope.

High Octane Society!
This series has proved to be a real find. Each of the books in the first four follows the same group but has its own unique flavour. The first two were largely about the initial group forming and then a very logical and structured progression towards a new society. Book 3, Society, is much more explosive, it is almost non-stop action as the new homeland is threatened in all manner of ways. The group also find ways to investigate the origins of the pandemic. The epilogue feels hugely ominous, it's extremely well done.
Then the fourth book. Hope, takes off in yet another completely new direction as the group splits with Dan leading a team on the start of an epic journey desperate to find answers. During both books the characters continue to develop, especially Leah and Ash. Yes the dog steals the show at times! The story is split between Dan's group and the enormous struggle faced by those left behind after losing much of the group's driving force.
RC Bray, I don't think there's much I can say here that hasn't already been said. Superb, and he is even more suited to these latest two books with their increased tension and higher octane levels.
In short this is becoming an extremely strong series especially with the excellent decision to provide these value for money / credit publisher's packs.

Welsh accent?
I really like RC Bray, he does and amazing job with his voice. That said his English accent bounces around a bit but it’s not distracting from the story and his ability do do the female voices is a real talent but for the love of God someone please take him to Wales for a weekend. 😂
Great story and well worth a listen.

Why the yank ?
The story is very good. Post apocalyptic fare with no zombies for a change. Likeable main characters and a full selection of nasties. But why oh why is the narrator an American? Ive nothing against Mr Bray, he really is very good unless he is trying UK accents. He’s not great at any of them and it did spoil my enjoyment of an otherwise great story. Surely there are numerous competent UK narrators who would have done better ?? Shame really. Having said that i will finish the series.

Poisonous nonsense
I find something strangely compelling about stories set in a post-apocalyptic England. I guess they are a bit like rough camping -- a salutary reminder to appreciate the comforts we normally take for granted, while we have them. Who knows what the future will bring, after all? Reading about people struggling to survive harsh winters in a depleted, post-industrial world certainly increases the pleasure I feel, sitting by my fire with a glass of port, while the rain lashes against my double glazing.
But...
Devon C Ford's "After it Happened" series is a load of right-wing, survivalist codswallop.
There is a certain kind of person who just can't wait (or so he thinks) for civilization to fail, so he can break out the guns and start administering summary justice, free of the shackles of a liberal society. Ford's books read like a fantasy of that sort. The books appear almost to be a vehicle for the author to express his reactionary politics.
Of course, one should not mistake the characters' motives for those of the author. It's perfectly possible to write a good book about conflicting, dysfunctional people, and for the reader to identify with the characters, without necessarily sharing their views. Anything by Joseph Heller (Catch-22, etc) could be an example of this. What makes Ford's books so disturbing is that frightening, disturbing deeds are described in an approving way. On one occasion, for example, some members of the survivor community -- who are clearly the "good guys" of the story -- get their hands on a paedophile. The author describes with no nuance or subtlety how they put him in a car, shoot his hands so he can't operate the controls, and then push the car into a lake.
Frankly I can imagine this sort of thing happening, and it probably wouldn't take the end of the world to make it happen. What's frightening is that these actions cause our heroes not even a sliver of moral misgiving, not even an hour's lost sleep. The way they conceal their deeds from the wider community is also described with apparent approval.
Most of the characters in the books fall into traditional good-guy/bad-guy roles, with the good guys being unable to commit any wrong. Even the summary execution of young men scarcely old enough to shave (in the author's own words) seems unproblematic. There's something faintly Homeric about the violence, in fact -- people who can't fight, or won't, are portrayed as an underclass; the whole story turns on the deeds of people who are prepared to get their hands bloody.
I'm not saying that Ford's books are unrealistic, or badly plotted. On the contrary, I can imagine all too well what would happen if grown-ups with guns ended up in a Lord of the Flies scenario; but I get the impression that Ford would side with Jack rather than poor old Piggy. Lord of the Flies is a disturbing book, and intentionally so; it expresses its author's deeply pessimistic view of human nature. After it Happened is a disturbing book series because the most troubling aspects seem almost unintentional; it's as if the author hasn't even thought about the ethical implications of the actions his characters take. Ford's characters do nothing worse than those of the excellent Walking Dead graphic novels do; but the protagonists of the Walking Dead stories are portrayed as, and understood to be, deeply flawed. The only flawed characters in Ford's books are those who prefer muesli over meat.
I read the first two books in the series, despite my misgivings, wondering whether the author would eventually display some awareness of the irony implicit in his own work. By the third book, I realized that wasn't going to happen.
I've rarely read a book that caused me as much disquiet, for all the wrong reasons. Heaven forbid that these books should be read by children.
