About this listen

In the bleak northern crown of the world, war is coming. The first in the Echoes of the Fall series, The Tiger and the Wolf is an epic fantasy novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

‘Addictively brilliant’ – John Gwynne, author of Malice

Maniye hides a deadly secret. Her father is the chieftan of the Wolf clan, whose members can shift into wolves. Her mother was the queen of the Tiger clan, whose members can take the form of a tiger. Maniye can become both.

These tribes have been enemies for generations, and Maniye is an outcast. Refusing to disown half her soul, she escapes – rescuing a prisoner of her father's clan in the process. Broken Axe, a killer, is set on their trail to drag them back to retribution. Her father plots to rule the north, and controlling Maniye is crucial to his scheme . . .

Across the land, other tribes prepare for strife. Strangers from the far south appear, seeking allies in their own conflict. Priests foresee danger, predicting a darkness shall fall across the land. Some say a great war is coming, overcoming even Wolf ambitions. What will be the spark to set the world ablaze?

Critic reviews

It's addictively brilliant! The protagonist is vivid and sympathetic – and I love both the story and the world Adrian has created (John Gwynne, author of Malice and Shadow of the Gods)
A classically brilliant fantasy writer, a pusher of boundaries, a great storyteller (Paul Cornell, author of the Shadow Police series and Witches of Lychford)
A brilliantly conceived and executed shape-changer Bronze Age saga featuring a heartbreaking heroine . . . Readers will be captivated by the well-realized characters, splendid action, and a satisfying conclusion that promises more wonders to come (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
This is a satisfying read, a story you can really lose yourself in (SFX)
One of the most interesting and accomplished writers in speculative fiction (Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon and To Sleep in a Sea of Stars)

The sheer talent and the wealth of imagination this man has is amazing to say the least. Long may he live.

Never met an Adrian Tchaikovsky book I didn't like

I really enjoyed everything in this book. The writting, the narration and the story, except it was a bit too much about chasing many tracks :-)

Still, it was really good and I would recommend it if you like that kind of book ! Interesting to be in a world between human et animal, between wild and humanity.

Great story, bit too much pursuits at the end

The story, while a little rough at the start while you learn the names and terms is really solid and quite good with nice twists and fights. Could even be a stand alone story if you want it to be.

Another point i wasn't a massive fan of was it didn't always describe the 'Champions' very clearly making them hard to picture, however this may have been by design.

However, and while i don't like saying this, the narration is the worst i have heard in a book, the tones or emotions rarely shifted from a lack of emotion regardless of what was going on and the slight voice changes per character were often more childlike sounding. I tend not to mind this as much as long as the narration is clear (it was), but i can see this damaging others view of the story more. I still enjoyed the book despite this.

solid good story, poor narration

It was a good book maybe not great at least for me personally, but still enjoyable. I didn’t really feel emotionally invested in the characters. Perhaps this is myself, and other people might love it.

Not the best I read from Adrian Tchaikovsky, but it was good

Love the story as usual with Tchaikovsky. A deep, interesting world and fun characters. Unfortunately the narrator makes it kind of hard to listen to. Sounds like a computerised voice. The attempts at different voices for the characters are so bad as to be quite distracting, and the general tone is just so laboured. Not a deal breaker on the book but a shame.

Love the book, shame about Microsoft Sam
