Summary

A Year of Marvellous Ways is the much anticipated and utterly beguiling new novel from Sarah Winman, author of the international best seller When God Was a Rabbit.

Cornwall, 1947. Marvellous Ways is a 90-year-old woman who's lived alone on a remote creek for nearly all her life. Recently she's taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She's waiting for something - she's not sure what, but she'll know it when she sees it.

Drake is a young soldier left reeling by the war. He's agreed to fulfil a dying man's last wish and hand deliver a letter to the man's father in Cornwall. But Drake's journey doesn't go to plan and sees him literally wash up in Marvellous' creek, broken in body and spirit.

When Marvellous comes to his aid, an unlikely friendship grows between the two. Can Drake give Marvellous what she needs to say good-bye to the world, and can she give him what he needs to go on?

Beautifully read

This story was beautifully read by the author - this would normally put me off as I have listened to many novel poorly read by the author thinking WHY didn’t they employ a professional!
However as Sarah Winman is an actor she reads extremely well delineating the different characters with panache.
The story is beautifully written & rather quirky.
Enjoy.

A Marvellous First Listen

Have just visited this book with my book club. I thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Winman's reading. It is her book and she brings her characters to life. There is a rhythm in the reading which strongly suggests a prose poem, this supports the notion that there is a strong thread of magical realism; that a life can be a profound and ultimately satisfactory whole.
HOWEVER, the members who had read the book were confused and disturbed by Sarah's unconventional abandonment of punctuation. There was a general agreement of disappointment.
THUS, I would strongly recommend that a first contact should be through the spoken word.

If I could give it more, I would!

Goodness what can I add to the praise that has already been heaped on to this recording, the story is beguiling, I really cared for all the characters and Marvellous Is marvellous, the narration is magical, unlike other authors this one can really bring the story to life and her accents sounded real to me, I couldn’t stop listening but I didn’t want it to end. It is one long prose poem in that the language and descriptions are beautiful but this does not halt the flow of the tale just adds to the overall richness. Get it you will, I think, not regret it.

Classic Sarah Winnman. Lovely gentle story. Each character has there own story which explaines how they arrived in the story.

Great characters

though their personalities could have been fleshed out more. the great secret at the end was apparent to me from early on and I found it mystifying and unattractive that Marvellous didn't shed light and answer all the questions that anyone would have in that situation. (am trying not to give too much away) also narrator is very accomplished at giving the characters authentic voices but there is often a stickiness to her voice that is offputting.
