About this listen

From the best-selling author of Cry Baby, the beginning of a brilliant and gripping police procedural series set in Liverpool, perfect for fans of Peter James and Mark Billingham.

A woman at home in Liverpool is disturbed by a persistent tapping at her back door. She's disturbed to discover the culprit is a raven and tries to shoo it away. Which is when the killer strikes.

DS Nathan Cody, still bearing the scars of an undercover mission that went horrifyingly wrong, is put on the case. But the police have no leads except the body of the bird - and the victim's missing eyes.

As flashbacks from his past begin to intrude, Cody realises he is battling not just a murderer but his own inner demons, too. And then the killer strikes again, and Cody realises the threat isn't to the people of Liverpool after all - it's to the police.

Following the success and acclaim of the Callum Doyle novels, A Tapping at My Door is the first instalment of David Jackson's new Nathan Cody series.

Great book made even better by the excellent narrator, looking forward to a follow up book.

Excellent

First time I have listened (or read) this author. I thought this was excellent on all fronts - tho would agree with a couple of other reviewers that the end could have been a little better. That said most of what I read and listen to I would say the same. I am not one to worry about 'female' characters but I have to say I agree with other reviewers on this score that both our hero's boss and the new constable (his ex girlfriend) are ace. I was disappointed to see other titles by this very excellent author are USA based - which I don't usually like. I certainly hope we have another one in this series.

For me a good new author found

Having lived in Liverpool for a number of years I was excited to find a book written about the city I have settled in. I don't feel compelled to write reviews often so this book must really have got my goat. Firstly there a number of factual inaccuracies in this book that will annoy any Liverpudlian (actual or adopted). Secondly the end is lame, it's too quick, it feels like what should have been another book was crammed into 6 chapters right at the end - and then we come to the performance - if ya can't do a Scouse accent mate get off the stage!!! It sounds forced - and Welsh at times. Perhaps this guy is a from Liverpool I don't know but jumping between a neutral accent and a 'Scouse' one has really messed this fella up! It sounds like a really long episode on fireman Sam (set in pontypandy - not Liverpool - YouTube it you'll love it). Any way as much as I'm sure future works about Sargent Cody will be dynamic and entertaining this book is not for me.
Warning do not listen on an epic trip down the m62 as other motorist may become concerned for their safety and your sanity (it was that cringeworthy I may have been shouting at it - in my best Scouse might I add)!!!!!!!

Disappointed scouser

I mainly enjoyed the book but found the last three hours had too much navel gazing about the male detective's psychological damage from the past. The narrator is very good.

Good for most of the book

Any additional comments?

The narrator gets your attentions and holds you in his spell. Excellent The story is easy to follow and the characters come to life. Thoroughly enjoyed this book

Hope there is to be more in this series

The narrator was amazing really brought the book to life. Although a crime thriller there was humour and suspense a really good listen.

Really good listen

a good first in series with added attraction for me, having been born and raised there long ago , of a Liverpool setting. makes me anticipate 2nd in series.

holds one's attention

This started out to be promising and I thought I'd found another author to follow, but alas no as I increasingly got infuriated by Cody's constant zone outs with what appeared to be PTSD type episodes and his maverick tendencies.

The book is set in Liverpool and I guessed midway through the serial killers vendetta and somewhat tentative connection with the birds.

You EVENTUALLY get to find out a BIT (but not ALL) about Cody's undercover history, and the possible reason for his PTSD and it leaves it open for another book!!

I couldn't really engage with any of the characters, and I don't know if I will bother with the next book, but never say never.

Started well but..
