Summary

FNH Audio presents a slightly abridged performance of this seventh and final volume of Charles Oman's military history classic. In this seventh volume, a detailed examination is made of the period from August 1813 to Aril 1814, the end of the war. This volume covers the Invasion of France, the capture of St Sebastian, and the battles of the Nivelle, The Nive, Othez and Toulouse.

This history, written many years after Napier's, draws its information from more firsthand accounts and corrects some of the more glaring mistakes and biases of Napier. Although this audiobook is slightly abridged, the only text removed is a small number of footnotes written entirely in French. All English text from the appendices and footnotes is present.

Volume one of this set is available under the title A History of the Peninsular War 1807-1809. What am I going to do now?

By George and all the Saints, What a glorious journey. I think this might be my "magnus opus" of audiobook listening. Head on the pillow, that last 30 minute thrill of the day before oblivion, the joyous fumbling to find the moment before yesterday's oblivion. And now the characters, friends and enemies of 5-ish years of my life disperse, a huge void. How must the soldiers who made it to the end have felt after that seemingly lifelong endeavour and the dissolution of their world? How did they go do something else? Great stuff, what the Internet and tech was made for. Thank you Mr Herriot.

End of an Epic!

I really enjoyed this. I have read the book a couple of times and enjoyed it, but the form of an audiobook is perfect for turning it into a tale. Naturally all wars blend a military angle with a political angle but Oman's text is good at not neglecting the one for the other: in particular in this volume, the effect of the politics surrounding the question of whether the European powers woulld settle for a peace with Napoleon or would insist on an abdication is dealt with very well, as are all the intrigues surrounding the detained Spanish king, Ferdinand VII. All this sits very well amidst a military history which captures the drama and bravery of some of the battles and sieges, which are almost too numerous to mention. French, Spanish and Portuguese viewpoints and sources are not neglected at all and the attention to detail is superlative: thus Oman remains the premier historian of the conflict. The narration is very good in terms of conveying the emotion and tone of the historical persons and also the voice of the writer. The only thing that detracts from the performance is the occasional mispronunciation of some of the French and Spanish names.
