About this listen

Walk a day in a Roman's sandals. What was it like to live in one of the ancient world's most powerful and bustling cities - one that was eight times more densely populated than modern-day New York?

In this entertaining and enlightening guide, best-selling historian Philip Matyszak introduces us to the people who lived and worked there. In each hour of the day, we meet a new character - from emperor to slave girl, gladiator to astrologer, medicine woman to water-clock maker - and discover the fascinating details of their daily lives.

I loved SPQR and thought there was no more room for Ancient Rome in my life. But this is the perfect counterbalance to that big sweep of history – it’s insight into what life was actually like, day to day, for Romans. Each chapter is an hour in someone’s company, from nightwatchman to vestal virgin, and they’re brought to life here in wonderful detail. Matyszak is that rare historian who can write with a lightness of touch and humour that makes this a consistently engaging and informative listen. Highly recommend!

Fantastic insight into Roman life

This was a really fantastic book! The stories were compelling, well researched and it covered the 24 hours in a lyrical way, which allowed it to talk about every single aspect of Roman life! So much detail given that you truly could imagine these things occurring around you, and I got to learn loads of things about their daily routine such as that their working days started before dawn, or that there was no cultured yeast for bread making so the sourdough method was used, or that they take naps after work before going to dinner.

My only qualm is that the quality of the audio recording and/or the narrator's voice at times was grating, especially when you cranked it up to high volume as I did - I like to blast it on speakers so I can go about my daily chores.

Excellent story, really suits the audiobook form!

I loved this book. Well written, well read, I have no trouble imaging ancient Rome in my head from the text I've been listening to. I well recommend this book.

I was fascinated to learn the details of how Ancient Romans lived their lives, and also thought that the book was beautifully structured. I’ve learnt a lot.

Really enjoyed this

if, like me, the idea of listening to an audio book on such an incredibly in-depth period of time seems overwhelming this book is a great and easy to digest insight with 15 minute easily digestible chapters.

a great idea for an audio book which works well, I learnt a lot, a great starting point for someone who wants to explore the wonders of rome but wants to be eased in gently.

an easy insight to rome
