About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

When it comes to persuasion, success can begin before you say a word.

In his global best seller Influence, Professor Robert Cialdini transformed the way we think about the craft of persuasion. Now he offers revelatory new insights into the art of winning people over: it isn’t just what we say or how we say it that counts but also what goes on in the moments before we speak.

This is the world of ‘pre-suasion’, where subtle turns of phrase, seemingly insignificant visual cues and apparently unimportant details of location can prime people to say yes even before they are asked. It’s a world where the cautious blurt out personal information if asked a particular initial question, where online purchases are influenced by unrelated background images, and where exam results are affected by the layout of the classroom. And as Cialdini reveals, it’s a world you can master. If you understand the tools of pre-suasion, you will better placed to win a debate, get support for an idea or cause, promote a campaign - even persuade yourself to do something you find difficult.

Drawing on the latest research, and packed with fascinating case studies, Pre-Suasion is both a rigorous work of cutting-edge scholarship and a compelling account of the strange workings of the human mind. It’s also a supremely practical guide to enhancing your powers of influence.

Pre-suasion compliments and builds on Cialdini’s earlier “influence”. It’s thoughtfully put together and every point is carefully evidenced.

I have a couple of reservations though. First it borrows quite a bit of content from Influence and I recognised some of the examples. Second to be effective in bringing change in how you work you need to practice. In this I am not sure audiobook is quite the right tool - if your attention wanders - you missed it. So I have listened to this twice and taken notes to grasp some of the ideas. And perhaps that’s the greatest compliment - the ideas are really worth understanding. And I think the evidence presented on corporate integrity is really important and deserves further research. Corporate malfeasance is much more expensive than we realise.

It’s well evidenced, insightful and persuasive

Very easy to listen to and mind boggling at the same time.
I bought this book after purchasing INFLUENCE and the author takes it to another level explaining how unaware we are of the things that affect us.
I highly recommend!

Mind blowing

Lots of examples and stories combined with clear everyday language makes this book easy to understand. I think it's a must-read for anyone I interested in marketing, negotiation or motivation.

Good book, but not groundbreaking

The awful narration completely spoils what could have been a great book, it's like listening to a cheesy infomercial or an 80's corporate training video

Narration is terrible

An excellent book that perfectly complimented the previous book by the same author "Influence".
To tell you how good the book is, I will be reading it again in-shaa'Allah. Highly highly recommended because after absorbing the information within one becomes aware of our innate nature in decision making and how our decisions can be so easily persuaded by different contextual cues. We think we are making an informed choice based on our experience in life but actually we are highly vulnerable to decisions based on the immediately preceding context. Fascinating!!! I want to talk to people about this book!!

How did I manage before reading this book!?
