 正岡千鶴は、家族も家も失った元子爵令嬢。天涯孤独の身となった今は、帝都・小石川にある三条家で使用人として働いている。紡績業で成功した新華族の三条家は、小石川に工場を持ち地域のまとめ役にもなっていたが、もともとは立場が上の旧華族だった正岡家の千鶴には残酷な態度をとり続ける。千鶴は、日頃から嫌みや蔑みの言葉を投げつけられていたが、華族としての矜持を忘れずにいようと心に誓っていた。
　そんな頃、街で流行病が猛威を振るい、人々が次々と倒れる事態に。不気味なことに、亡くなる人は、枕もとに死神が立ったと言って息を引き取るらしい。三条家には恐慌状態の人々が押し寄せるようになり、死神の怒りを鎮めるためとして、千鶴は生贄の花嫁に選ばれてしまう。
　死神の花嫁――それは死を意味する。だが、苦しむ人々の役に立つのならと千鶴は覚悟を決め、夜の闇の中、花嫁衣装で死神が祀られている神社の鳥居をくぐる。ところが、現われた死神・八雲は「妻など娶らぬ」と冷たく千鶴に告げた。すでに帰る場所もなく、街の人々のためにも引き下がるわけにいかない千鶴は、生贄の花嫁として、愛を知らない死神のもとで暮らすことになるが…!?
