 もの悲しく静まりかえった秋のある日。私は一日中馬に乗って、アッシャー家を目指していました。

アッシャー家の館を初めて見たとき、私は正体がわからない不安におそわれました。
長い間雨や風にさらされたような建物のかべ。目のようにぽっかり開いたまど。
まばらに生えた草、かれて白くなった木。それらを見ているだけで、心のおくが冷えてきて、わびしく、やりきれない気持ちになってきます。
それなのに私は今日から数週間、このしめっぽくて気味の悪い館にとまらなくてはなりません。この館のあるじであり、おさななじみでもあるロドリック・アッシャーにまねかれたからです。

彼から手紙がとどいたのは、つい先日のことでした。
手紙には、アッシャーが最近病気で苦しんでいることが書かれていました。彼は私に会いたいと願っていました。

アッシャー家の崩壊

エドガー・アラン・ポー（Edgar Allan Poe）
1809年1月19日～1849年10月7日。アメリカ合衆国ボストン市生まれの小説家・詩人。血液型はAB型。1841年に発表された小説『モルグ街の殺人』には探偵のC・オーギュスト・デュパンが登場し、史上初の推理小説と評価されることが多く、その後の推理小説の発展に寄与した。また、ホラー小説の分野でも一時代を代表する作家とみなされている。さらに作品に科学的事実を取り入れる手法はジュール・ヴェルヌによって注目され、近代SF発展の一因ともなった。ちなみに日本の推理作家、江戸川乱歩の名前は、エドガー・アラン・ポーをもじって付けられたものである。©2023 PanRolling Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Myths Literature & Fiction
