Virginia Ironside was born in 1944 and she wrote her first book, Chelsea Bird, when she was eighteen. She became a journalist, first working for the Sunday Telegraph and then as a rock columnist on the Daily Mail in the sixties. After she had her son, William Grove-White, now a composer and a member of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, she became an agony aunt for Woman magazine, followed by stints at the Sunday Mirror, Today and the Sunday Post, ending up at the Independent. She is now agony aunt for the Oldie and the Idler. She has written over fifteen books, including the Burlap Hall series (Walker Books) for children, written when her son was young, an autobiography of her and Janey Ironside, her fashion icon mother, Janey and Me, (Fourth Estate) and more recently, the "No! I Don't Want to..." series (Quercus), the humorous diaries of Marie Sharp, a 60 - 70-year-old grannie. When her father, Christopher Ironside died (he designed the backs of the first decimal coins) she wrote '"You'll Get Over It" - the Rage of Bereavement' (Penguin) which is still in print years later.
