Being who you've always been When I wrote my first song lyrics at the age of 17, it was a logical consequence of my childhood in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. Reading (also aloud) and rhyming a bit had given me pleasure even before that, but it was only in combination with music that the lines flowed a little more steadily first to paper, then into the home computer. A small exception was a satirical story about the battle for points at school, which was never used and which I read to only a few people at the time - the only handwritten German manuscript that survived from that time. By the mid-90s, digital recording technology had advanced to the point where it was affordable, and I was finally able to launch the first serious music collaboration with a few like-minded people. The initial synth and sequencer project soon turned into a dynamic and unsuccessful rock band, to which I contributed primarily as a producer, singer and songwriter of English lyrics. Two CDs were produced before I moved to the Rhine shortly after the millennium. There, another band project with melodic grunge/metal and own songs was created very quickly, but already then, beyond a setting to music, German-language poems and a little later also short stories were added to the creations. Parallel to this, I had already begun a few years earlier to write gentle tales as dream and sleep stories. As a child of a family that was influenced by science on the one hand and religion on the other, it was difficult to cope with this contrast. So I had already decided early on to live top-heavy. Now this was to change: The short stories showed me a dormant side of myself, also I realized that already in role-playing games as a game master I had put less emphasis on combat and action, but much more on the narrative. I began to train in Reiki and get more involved with my spiritual side. However, it would take until 2014 for the first short tale to unfold and eventually Lindenreiter was born. This story, which opens the first volume of the Nian cycle, was directly inspired by my then 4-year-old son, who one morning suddenly had the idea to stand on a leaf and rise into the air with it. Flanked by some sometimes neo-romantic, sometimes thoughtful or funny winter poems, one of which has been written every year since 2011 for greeting cards, a continuous fantasy universe began to develop for the first time. Since then, I have been allowed to shape this world narratively, which corresponds so much more to a different understanding of human coexistence than we often experience. Seven volumes have emerged - and perhaps one or two more fringe stories will follow, even though the all-age main work is already suitable for both adults and children of elementary school age and up. Most readers though are currently adults, who confirm that the stories appeal to the inner child :). And who knows what all will follow, because I slowly realize that as an author I may take a big step closer to my vision: to be who I have always been. Paul M. Belt
