Heidi von Palleske is a writer, actor and activist who resides in Toronto Ontario. Her early work as a film actor includes David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers as well as leads in a string of indie features. (check out her IMDB page) Her first novel, They Don't Run Red Trains anymore won her the prestigious H.R. Percy Award for best novel in Eastern Canada. Two White Queens and the One-Eyed Jack has garnered early praise from both film industry and the literary world alike, including endorsements from John Irving, Jeremy Irons and Lauren B Davis, as well as being a Loan Stars (the association of library professionals) release top 10 pick for spring 2021. Because Heidi has spent her creative career straddling two worlds, literature and film, her writing embraces imagery and often employs snap-shot narrative. Her interest is in character and their emotional lives, with plot as a backdrop to their journeys. She calls her work "impressionist writing," a term she came up with to describe the non-linear nature and the intensity of memory where narrative takes place through flashes of memory. Throughout her work she has explored both how the world around us influences us, while the memory stored in our DNA impacts upon us. For von Palleske, storytelling in as much as emotional journey as it is a series of events. Elements of her own childhood sometime emerge in her writing: her love of Lake Ontario, images of farms clashing with life in Toronto, admiration of visual art, dedication to the creation of something perfect, poetry and the classics. And always there is an element of something greater the mundane, whether it be alluding to the great myths of the hero's journey. If you ask von Palleske why she writes her answer is always, "I am writing for my life."
