Japan has profoundly shaped Curtis Piper’s life and career. With a degree in Asian history, he spent two years immersing himself in Japanese language, history, and culture at Waseda University in Tokyo. His deep connection to Japan is further enriched by his marriage to a Japanese wife. Curtis served as a Foreign Service Reserve Officer in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972, providing refugees with food, clothing, and building materials. He also introduced the high-yield "Miracle Rice" (IR-8) to one of Vietnam’s poorest districts, helping to alleviate food shortages. Before becoming a writer, he worked as Senior Vice President at Nomura Real Estate International in Los Angeles. He later earned a teaching credential from California State University, Los Angeles, and spent six years teaching at Title One schools in underserved neighborhoods. Curtis conducted extensive research for his novel, The Shogun’s Gold: Solving a Historical Mystery. During his research, he befriended a descendant of John Manjiro, a key figure in the book. As a teenage castaway, Manjiro was rescued by an American ship captain and raised in Massachusetts. He later returned to Japan, where he rose to samurai status and, in 1858, advised the Shogunate during negotiations with Commodore Matthew Perry, who pushed for the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Genealogy is another of Curtis' passions. A distant French cousin traced his family lineage back 700 years, a theme that plays a crucial role in unraveling the mystery of the shōgun’s treasure in his novel. Curtis is currently working on his second book, which also explores an Asian historical connection. The publication date is yet to be determined.
