Crystal Jackson is an acclaimed author, historian, and filmmaker whose work has helped redefine how the history of the San Fernando Valley is understood and preserved. A proud Valley native, she is widely recognized for documenting the region’s rich, multicultural past—bringing to light stories long overlooked in traditional narratives of Los Angeles history. As the founder and president of the Pacoima Historical Society, Jackson has become a leading force in preserving the cultural and historical legacy of the Northeast San Fernando Valley. Her work has earned national recognition, including honors from the United States Congress and numerous civic awards, for her commitment to community-based history and public scholarship. Her landmark book, The Entrance: Pacoima’s Story, is a sweeping 600-page chronicle spanning over 1,500 years, positioning Pacoima as a vital center of cultural diversity and social influence within the broader American story. Expanding beyond Pacoima, Jackson’s body of work explores the interconnected histories of the San Fernando Valley as a whole. Her publications include "Not Colored," a historical novel based on the life of the first woman in the LAPD detective unit, and the internationally recognized "The Marilyn Monroe Connection," which uncovers the story of a San Fernando Valley figure linked to Monroe’s death. Through these works, she reveals the Valley’s often-unseen role in shaping regional and national narratives. Jackson is also an award-winning filmmaker, having written and directed historical documentaries such as PacoimaStories: Land of Dreams, further amplifying community voices through visual storytelling. Her work has been featured by major media outlets, including ABC, CBS, PBS, the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily News, and NPR, bringing wider attention to the Valley’s untold stories of resilience, activism, and cultural transformation. Deeply engaged in public history, Jackson collaborates with public officials, educators, and preservationists across Los Angeles. She has served on advisory councils for the Getty Conservation Institute, the Los Angeles Office of Historic Preservation, and UCLA’s History & Geography Project. She is also the project manager of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley’s Historical Timeline exhibit and serves on the museum’s Board of Directors, as well as the board of the Center for Advanced Learning, a Los Angeles inner-city charter school. Her latest book, "Valley Chronicles: Told and Untold Stories of the San Fernando Valley," is a comprehensive historical narrative and photographic archive documenting the evolution of one of Southern California’s most significant regions. Tracing the Valley’s history from its geological origins and Indigenous civilizations through brutal Spanish colonization, industrial expansion, and modern urban development, this literary work provides critical context for understanding the area's transformation into a globally recognized cultural hub.
