Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is haunted by the past in his latest case, and his private life, in Dead Man's Time, by award winning crime writer Peter James.

A vicious robbery at a secluded Brighton mansion leaves its elderly occupant fighting for her life. Millions of pounds’ worth of valuables have been stolen.

Within days, Grace is racing against the clock, following a murderous trail that leads him from the shady antiques world of England, across Europe and all the way back to the New York waterfront’s gang struggles of 1922, chasing a killer driven by the force of one man’s greed and another man’s fury.

Although the Roy Grace novels can be listened to in any order, Dead Man's Time is the ninth gripping title in the bestselling series. Enjoy more of the Brighton detective’s investigations with Want You Dead and You Are Dead.

Now a major ITV series, Grace, starring John Simm.

Peter James has penetrated the inner workings of police procedures, and the inner thoughts and attitudes of real detectives, as no English crime writer before him. His hero, Roy Grace, may not be the most lively cop, nor the most damaged by drink, weight or misery, but he's one of the most believable
Meticulous research gives his prose great authenticity . . . James manages to add enough surprises and drama that by the end you’re rooting for the police and really don’t know if they will finally get their men

I was disappointed by by the author's previous book, Dead Tomorrow, but am delighted to say that the present book is the best yet. A intricately plotted detective story that never flags with just the right amount of personal details about the main players to flesh out their characters. For those who have been following the life and career of DCI Grace there is an intriguing side story about his wife Sandy who disappeared a decade earlier. The narrator is very good and does a variety of convincing accents. Recommended.

A return to great form with an engrossing story

Although I did enjoy this I was a little disappointed as I don't think this is one of Peter James best. I have loved most of the Roy Grace novels and think they work fantastically well in audio. He excels at characterisation and making the listener really feel a part of the story. This is obviously crucial in an audiobook and one of the things I miss so much about reading is that total immersion in the story and characters. Peter James makes this possible in the Roy Grace series and this is helped by the narrator who does a pretty good job here. I was however, disappointed in the plot , I felt little interest in the victim's family and although the New York connection made it a little more interesting I wasn't completely gripped. However, James still writes a better crime novel than many of his contemporaries and I continue to be interested in Grace's personal life.
If you have never listened to a Peter James, start at the beginning, if you have, persevere with this one.

Worth a listen
