Russian Poetry

There are few better ways to discover the identity of a nation or people than by listening to their poetry. From historical events to moral values to the political landscape (and often visions of the actual landscape), poetry, at its best, reveals the soul of a people. And Russia has offered us some of the very best.

This collection, first published in 1917, features the works of 10 Russian poets who were active in the early 20th century. In the preface, the anthologist and translator, Paul Selver, writes: "It is hoped that this collection will convey a fairly adequate idea of the chief features in modern Russian poetry, a branch of Russian literature which has so far received very little serious attention in this country."

These masterly poems span the whole of Nabokov's career from "Music", written in 1914, to the short, playful "To Vera", composed in 1974. The works are newly translated by Dmitiri Nabokov, and include "The University Poem", an extraordinary autobiographical poem in which Nabokov recalls his life in Cambridge, with its crooked alleys and age-old gates, teas at the vicar's and British girls.
