What a time it was. Suddenly, all across Nottingham, the UK's ninth biggest city, transmitters were crackling into life with another kind of voice, another kind of sound. In a way, we were back to the '60s. And in a way, we weren't. It all happened in the city of Robin Hood; but it could have been anywhere in the UK, where similar stories were being played out by like-minded individuals who were starting to realize that something was very, very wrong.... 40 Watts from Nowhere is the inspirational story of one woman with a passion, a lot of guts - and a radio transmitter in her bedroom closet. When law office receptionist Sue Carpenter first asked how she might start a legitimate radio station, everyone laughed. Getting on the air (legitimately) was a multimillion-dollar ambition. But in 1995, with the help of a few subversive techies and pirate radio gurus, Sue built her first transmitter in her hilltop San Francisco apartment and launched KPBJ, enlisting friends as DJs.

Pirate radio (unlicensed radio broadcasting) has played a historically significant though usually ignored role in the greater cause of freedom of the press; though today other forms of broadcasting may seem to have eclipsed it, we still need to honor and advance pirate radio in order to maximize freedom of the press.
