India is often reputed to be the home of the fairy tale. Here are some of the best from the sub-continent, from the Jatakas to the folktales of Kashmir. You'll hear stories about the evil magician Punchkin, the magic fiddle, and more.

Joseph Jacobs was an Australian folklorist who documented fairy tales from around the world. This charming collection of traditional Indian stories includes some of the oldest stories in the world and features wicked queens, the snake prince, an ivory city, cranes and tigers, terrifying demons, kings and palaces, fairy princesses, and a whole host of talking animals - including a tortoise!

American Indian Fairytales is a collection of Native American folklore retold for children and young adults. Margaret Compton (1852-1903) drew on authentic lore from a wide selection of regions. The tales include "The Story-Teller Himself", "Snowbird and the Water-Tiger", "The Coyote or Prairie Wolf", and "How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird".

Patrick Healy, a teacher, travelled around the world, talked with people in different places, and collected around 500 myths, legends, and folktales and their several alternative versions.
