The Void Queen Trilogy

Flying at the helm of a powerful battle cruiser, former pirate Catarina Vargus leads a collection of colonists, miners, engineers, and navy personnel to establish an outpost far beyond the frontier. The Royal Navy needs a forward operating base in their war against the alien race known as Apex, who has vowed to exterminate all sentient life in the quarter. Catarina's expedition soon draws the attention of Scandian marauders, driven from their home worlds by plague and war in search of plunder.

Launching from a precarious foothold on Fort Alliance, Catarina Vargus leads her fleet deep into hostile territory, trying to secure a base to support the fleet's operations against the brutal Apex menace. Scandian star wolves infest the sector, led by marauder captains who have vowed to eliminate the navy incursion into their territory. When Catarina gets a signal from a battered navy destroyer limping in from the inner frontier, she takes a small task force to investigate, and is soon sucked into a civil war brewing among various Scandian factions.

Led by Jess Tolvern aboard HMS Blackbeard, a battered allied fleet has kept Apex bottled up in the Persia System as Tolvern awaits desperately needed reinforcements. But when a brutal enemy push breaks a harvester ship free of Persia, and she discovers the extent of Apex war preparations, it becomes clear that only the combined might of Albion, Hroom, Scandian, and Singaporean forces have a chance of defeating the enemy once and for all.
