Book One of the Space Wolf Series

The saga of Ragnar Blackmane begins! From savage tribesman in the cold wastes of Fenris to superhuman warrior of the Space Wolves Chapter, this tale charts the beginnings of the Young Wolf, the birth of a hero of the Imperium.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a Black Library classic, and the start of a six-book series that delves into the early life of Ragnar Blackmane. Discover his past, his pack, and the deeds that led him to glory and fame. In the 20 years that have passed since its release, its appeal has only grown, and this audio edition is the perfect celebration of that.

THE STORY

On the grim death world of Fenris, the Space Wolves Chapter selects its aspirants from the best and brightest of the young tribesmen. Ragnar of the Thunderfist tribe finds his life changed forever when he is chosen. After being revived from a savage death on the battlefield, Ragnar is recruited into the fearsome Space Wolves Chapter. He is then thrown into a galactic war against the dark forces of Chaos. However, the implanting of the Canis Helix unleashes his primal instincts and Ragnar must fight to control the beast within him.

One of the best 40K books out there! First one I ever read and loving it being an audiobook now!

Amazing book!

Stone cold classic. I remember reading this years ago and finding it a fascinating look into the journey a space wolf takes on his way to become a full Astartes.
You can tell it was written a while ago as some of the lore has clearly changed, but that does not distract from how brilliant the book is.

Excellent narration as well. First time I’ve heard this guy and hope to hear him do more Space Wolves books.

Classic

Enjoyed the details, the making of a space wolf. Well told thought processes of the character

Ragnar’s origin

I was drawn to the Space Wolves by the new lines of models released by Games Workshop and thought I'd give this book a try and learn more about the viking themed space marines. Listened to it over the course of a couple of days whilst painting and walking the dogs.

It's a fairly decent entry level into Space Wolves as a chapter but also space marines as a concept. Focusing on the character of Ragnar Blackmane, it tells the story of how he becomes selected as an aspirant to become a Space Wolf undergoing arduous trials before being deemed worthy as a space marine. I'm still quite early into my black library, and I gather some Space Marine stories can just be bolter porn. I would say other books such as Spears of the Emperor or some books of the Horus Heresy provide better insights into the faction of superhuman warriors particularly next to the humans of the 40k universe, but as a fan of Vikings and Norse Mythology, Space Wolf did draw me into the world of Fenris and I grew to like some of the characters.

Philip Sacramento's voice is really nice to listen to. I have found some audiobook narrators in the black library have sent me to sleep, but he really sells the high fantasy world of Fenris. Maybe I'm biased because I'm Irish too... I will definitely be listening to the next book in the series as I paint my space wolves!

A decent introduction to the Space Wolves
