Young Julien Sorel, the son of a country timber merchant, carries a portrait of his hero Napoleon Bonaparte and dreams of military glory. A brilliant career in the Church leads him into Parisian high society, where, 'mounted upon the finest horse in Alsace', he gains high military office and wins the heart of the aristocratic Mlle Mathilde de la Mole. Julien's cunning and ambition lead him into all sorts of scrapes.

In the coming-of-age story, we follow a young Italian nobleman, Fabrizio Valserra, Marchesino del Dongo, on many adventures, including his experiences at the Battle of Waterloo, and romantic intrigues.

Pubblicato nel 1830 e ispirato ad un fatto di cronaca realmente accaduto qualche anno prima, "Il rosso e il nero", capolavoro di Stendhal, pseudonimo di Henri Beyle, narra la vertiginosa scalata sociale di Julien Sorel. Il giovane protagonista del romanzo, spinto da una inarrestabile ambizione, e favorito da due travolgenti storie amorose, la prima con la moglie del sindaco di una piccola cittadina e la seconda con la figlia di un marchese, riesce ad innalzarsi nella scala sociale fino ad ottenere un titolo nobiliare e una rendita.

È un romanzo modernissimo, profondamente "realista". Stendhal vi riassume a un tempo lo spaesamento che la nascente società borghese determina nell'individuo e la perdita tutta individuale delle illusioni.
