Summary

Le Rouge et le Noir, publié en 1830, est le premier grand roman de Stendhal. Résolument contemporain (le livre est sous-titré "Chronique de 1830"), il met en scène un enfant du siècle, Julien Sorel, dont le roman s'attache à décrire "la vérité, l'âpre vérité", pour reprendre l'énoncé du projet littéraire de Stendhal. L'extraordinaire finesse de l'approche psychologique des personnages confère une universalité à ce roman au demeurant ancré dans un cadre historique, politique et sociologique parfaitement réaliste.
