Immediately after the death of the aunt who raised her, Joyce Radway's cousins treat her like a servant. Through giving and receiving love, even a commonplace stuffed animal can become real in the eyes of a child, and millions of them do every day. Wickedly narrated by David Stifel, and written in 1729, this satiric essay on how to solve Ireland's chronic poverty is perhaps more shocking today than when it was written. In the 1960s, when Peter O'Toole did a public reading of this piece in Dublin, he very nearly started a riot. Newspapers the following day lambasted O'Toole's "shocking bad taste." Thomas Love Peacock was a linguist, scholar and East India Company official. He had a wide circle of literary friends, including Coleridge and Shelley, and his early works were poems, some of a considerable length. In 1815 his first novel, Headlong Hall, was published, and between that year and 1831, he published a further five novels. His final completed novel, Gryll Grange, was written in 1860 and published the following year. Peacock also produced a number of articles on literary and historical subjects, and some other long poems, which have faded into obscurity.

The Green Carnation is Robert Hichens' scandalous satire of the relationship between Oscar Wilde and his friend Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas. It was one of the works used against Wilde in his prosecution. Socialite Mrs. Windsor embarks upon her annual "Surrey week", a week of "perfect rusticity" in the country, with her cousin the widowed Lady Locke (and her young son Tommy), her French chef, her coachman and two tall footmen - and her three "wits": Madame Valtesi, Esmé Amarinth (Wilde), and Lord Reginald "Reggie" Hastings (Douglas).

This poem consists of 11 stanzas of varying length, the first four of which were composed in 1802. These deal with the subject of death, a concept with which Wordsworth confesses to having struggled within childhood.

Nicholas Herman was born around 1610 in Herimenil, Lorraine, a Duchy of France. As a young man, he was injured as a soldier in the Thirty Years War, sustaining a near-fatal injury which left him in chronic pain and crippled for the rest of his life. After some time as a civil servant, he entered a new monastery in Paris and became known as Brother Lawrence. It was there that he spent the rest of his life, discovering and following a simple and straightforward way to continually consider God’s presence.

In this collection, the authors were striving for a natural and unaffected style of verse that sought to avoid the elaborate structures and artifice that they considered had characterized much of the poetry of the 18th century. Of the 23 poems, only four are by Coleridge, including "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", which is the most famous poem in the collection.
