In this series of five short stories, Holmes and Watson continue their late investigations into dark crimes in 1920s London, joined by their excitable housekeeper at 221B Baker Street, the brilliant, buxom Miss Lily Hudson, and by Jasper Lestrade of Scotland Yard, the ambitious, respectful son of the late George Lestrade.

When Holmes receives a letter from a girl whose brother has disappeared, Emily is struck with the sense that she has heard Nicole Camberwell's name before. When they arrive in the North Yorkshire town of Rosedale Abbey, Emily recognises Nicole from the Dmitri Koval crime scene. With the discovery of Simon Camberwell's body, the group is thrown into a thick plot tied to the nearby lead mines and local superstition.

She wants the whole story about a dean forced to step down because of complaints of inappropriate behavior from three women who worked for him. But that's just the overture to double murder at SBU, taxing the abilities of larger-than-life amateur sleuth Sebastian McCabe and the police agencies of both town and gown.

It goes on to examine the origins of the character of Holmes himself from his appearance to his drug use and supposed dislike of women. We then move onto a mini-biography of some of the significant characters in the series.
