Men hans namn är också förknippat med något mycket mörkare, mindre känt - ett av de mest uppmärksammade brotten i amerikansk historia. Den första mars 1932 försvinner Charles Lindbergs 20 månader gamla son, Charles Augustus Jr., från barnkammaren i familjens villa. Någon har ställt en stege mot husets yttervägg, och klättrat in genom fönstret till rummet där pojken sov.
