En ningún momento Zweig menciona a Hitler por su nombre, pero es obvio que esta biografía de un hombre que trató de mantenerse por encima de la batalla.

Stefan Zweig dedicó este trabajo en gran parte biográfico al fundador del psicoanálisis, Sigmund Freud. Stefan Zweig logra poner la contribución científica de Freud bajo la luz adecuada y apreciarla adecuadamente, incluso teniendo en cuenta algunas debilidades. El logro real de Freud está, por lo tanto, menos en los detalles científicos que mucho más en la multitud de sus contribuciones con las que posibilitó e inspiró el pensamiento, el replanteamiento y la investigación de muchos de sus seguidores.

Calvino, quien junto con Martín Lutero es probablemente la figura más influyente en el movimiento de Reforma, logra tomar el poder en la ciudad república de Ginebra.
