The Seagull is Anton Chekhov's first major play, originally produced in 1896. It dramatizes the romantic and artistic conflicts between four characters: the famous middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin, the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina Arcadina, and her son, the symbolist playwright Constantine Treplef.

Raskolnikov, a student in St. Petersburg, murders an old woman, a money-lender, to prove his theory that violence purifies the strong. But no sooner is the deed done than Raskolnikov begins to feel remorse. What follows is one of the greatest psychological studies in world literature.

By the time Dostoevsky was 40, he had spent four years in prison and a further four years in the army as punishment for his part in a political conspiracy. His health was broken. He was gaunt, fervid, anxiety-ridden, and close to bankruptcy. It was in this state he wrote Notes from the Underground, a masterpiece of the psychology of theoutsider.

Part 6: Dolly, her children, and her mother, the Princess Shcherbatskaya, spend the summer with Kostya and Kitty. The couple's life is simple and unaffected, although Kostya is uneasy at the "invasion" of so many Shcherbatskys. He becomes extremely jealous when one of the visitors, Veslovsky, flirts openly with the pregnant Kitty. Kostya tries to overcome his jealousy, and briefly succeeds during a hunt with Veslovsky and Oblonsky, but eventually succumbs to his feelings and asks Veslovsky to leave. Veslovsky immediately goes to stay with Anna and Vronsky at their nearby estate.

Saint-Pétersbourg, un fonctionnaire devenu petit rentier, s'adonne à une introspection à l'adresse d'interlocuteurs muets. Bavard inoffensif ou pervers déroutant, il explore ses propres petitesses, se décrit tour à tour comme vil, malade et méchant puis se reprend, s'absout, visite son passé. Enlisé dans l'inaction, l'oisiveté l'entraîne vers des sentiments amers envers ses semblables, sa conscience l'accable mais il avance en forcené solitaire.

Notes from Underground, also translated as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be one of the first existentialist novels. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man), who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg.

Ce court texte raconte la découverte que fit un jour le barbier Ivan Iakovlievitch dans le pain qu'il s'apprêtait à croquer un matin : un nez. Il cherche à s'en débarrasser, en vain. La police finit par arrêter cet homme qui tente désespérément de se séparer d'un nez. De son côté Kovaliov, assesseur au collège a perdu son nez, il ne reste plus qu'à le lui rendre. Mais le nez semble refuser de retrouver sa place sur la figure de Kovaliov et préfère mener sa propre existence. À travers un récit totalement fantastique et absurde, Gogol dépeint ici des hommes face à leurs angoisses et leurs relations qui ne sont qu'un semblant de raison masquant la folie.

Propichtchine est fonctionnaire à Saint Pétersbourg. À travers lui se jouent toutes les conditions humaines, du pathétique à l'absurde, jusqu'à rendre floues les frontières entre le fou et le normal. "Le Journal d'un fou" est avant tout une histoire russe, où le héros est à la fois furieux, infiniment triste, et tendre.
