Composé à l’ombre d’un deuil—la mort du duc de Bourgogne, trépassé devant Nancy en Lorraine—ce poème méditatif interroge la gloire qui s’éteint, la vanité des choses et la constance des âmes. L'Iliade raconte le siège de Troie, mais ne le suit pas dans son intégralité. Le récit épique fait alterner batailles et scènes se passant chez les héros des deux camps, troyens et achéens, ainsi qu'au sein de l'Olympe, chez les dieux. Qui ne connaît les noms des héros de l'épopée: Diomède, Ménélas, Agamemnon, les Ajax, Ulysse, Hector et surtout Achille dont la colère va diriger le récit. Colère terrible qui ménera son meilleur ami, Patrocle, à la mort et rendra Achille ivre de vengeance. Vengeance aveugle qui verra Hector, héros des Troyens, anéanti dans un combat singulier.
