Willkommen in Baltimore! Heimat der Baltimore Ravens, letzter Aufenthalt Edgar Allan Poes und für diese Woche - die Residenz des King. Im Leben von Roger Finlay und seiner Freundin Catherine ist der Alltag eingezogen. Grau, eintönig und ohne Abwechslung leben die beiden nur noch für ihre Jobs. Aber das wird sich heute Abend ändern! Eigentlich wollten sie im trendigen Hafenquartier Baltimores gemeinsam speisen und anschließend noch ein bisschen die Stadt unsicher machen. Doch schon auf dem Weg zum Restaurant wird Roger von einem Stadtstreicher angesprochen.

Non si tratta sempre di animali domestici, o quantomeno la loro domesticità è lontana dalla nozione tradizionale. Se nell'annus mirabilis 1992 quella di topi, arvicole e ratti era stata una vera e propria invasione, il dibattito si riapre quando arrivano i piccioni con il vaiolo: la sorella del narratore, dolce animalista, si fa in quattro per curarli, e nondimeno cura, almeno idealmente, i topi, anzi i ratti che turbano la quiete della magione.

Dopo più di vent'anni il mitico Bar Sport e i suoi magnifici eroi hanno subito le trasformazioni del tempo: la proverbiale pasta Luisona è scomparsa, nel Bar Veramente Fico adesso espongono brioche invisibili a occhio nudo; tra gli avventori nessuno ha più una colorazione naturale, e si possono ammirare le abbronzature color albicocca o vitel tonné maschili piuttosto che i color biscotto dei fard e dei Caraibi femminili; nuovi elementi, tra cui spiccano i tristemente noti cellularisti, abilissimi nel rispondere al trillo nelle situazioni più impervie.

Uno sceneggiatore di Tangeri che soffre gravemente di insonnia scopre che per poter finalmente dormire deve uccidere qualcuno. Incomincia da sua madre. Sembra assurdo, anzi è assurdo - è sempre stato un uomo onesto, rispettoso, gentile - ma solo uccidendo, come in un gioco surreale, guadagna dei punti-sonno. Per minimizzare il problema, decide di limitarsi a persone già in fin di vita; la sfida è riuscire a essere lì, al loro capezzale, un attimo prima che spirino da sé. Il protagonista dà così il via a imprese rocambolesche per infilarsi nelle camere di ospedale.

Er wird nun von seiner Umwelt wahrgenommen, und seine Kollegen veranstalten sogar ein kleines Fest für ihn und den Mantel. Dann jedoch wird er überfallen und der neue Mantel wird ihm gestohlen.
