William E. Hardison was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was schooled and graduated from New Hanover High in 1948. In 1949, he entered the US Air Force and completed four years of service while stationed in Texas, Washington, DC, Guam, and Florida. Hardison came to Newport News, Virginia, in 1952 and worked for the shipyard until 1995, and then he worked with C&O Railroad.

“I live in a holler, and I’ve heard some folks talk that holler bunch won’t amount to a hill of beans, and I’ve heard others say that the sun never shines in those hollers.” “My mother let me know I was as good as anyone. ‘Ralph, don’t walk with your head down. There’s nothing shameful about running out of taters.’” “My daddy said, ‘Ralph, don’t quit. Quitting follows you to the grave.’” The philosophy in these words was with Ralph from the time of his childhood. He heard them from relatives and witnessed the people around him live them.

During these unsettling and uncertain times, I want to express how we are all experiencing similar situations and have interchangeable conversations. Amid COVID-19, I want to describe a piece of history, confirming how we are all in this together—to encourage everyone to acknowledge the fact that they are not alone.

This book is a diverse collection of short stories based on both fantasy and embellished facts. Although they are short stories, the plots and happenings will stick in your mind and the memories will not be short, although some will cause laughter and others wonder. I am very sure that you will read some of these stories more than once. In fact, I bet you!
