In his meteoric, 13-year rise to fame, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a mass movement for civil rights - with his relentless peaceful, non-violent protests, public demonstrations, and eloquent speeches. But as violent threats cast a dark shadow over Dr. King's life, Swanson hones in on James Earl Ray, a bizarre, racist prison escapee who tragically ends King's life.

The man who would be king is a story about a king who is not a king, yet a still made a king by those who needed a king, not knowing the man they made king would have been a king in another time and another place. It all started in a mid-sized, Midwest, slow metropolitan city known for its many different cultural festivals and events. As a child growing up in a place that seemed all inclusive from the outside and in public view for the world to see, while truly living a totally different life within the small community at large.
