La novella, che fa parte di una raccolta di fiabe (Il principe felice e gli altri racconti) pubblicata da Oscar Wilde nel 1888, narra la vicenda di un giovane studente alla ricerca di una rosa rossa da regalare alla sua amata e di un usignolo che decide di aiutarlo. Dopo diversi tentativi infruttuosi, l'uccellino trova un cespuglio di rose rosse che però hanno perso la loro colorazione a causa del freddo inverno. Così il cespuglio suggerisce all'usignolo di colorare una rosa col suo sangue.

Finist Clear Falcon 's feather is a Russian fairy tale collected by Alexander Afanasyev in Narodnye russkie skazki (1855-1863). The story of a daughter who asks only for a scarlet flower when her father goes to market, instead of the luxuries her two sisters ask for. Two times her father forgets; the third time, he buys a scarlet flower from a mysterious old man as long as the daughter agrees to marry his son, Finist the Falcon. This sets in motion a tale of love, jealousy, and adventure as the two overcome many obstacles to their love.

Les Frères Jacob (1785-1863) et Wilhelm (1786-1859) Grimm ont rassemblé au début du 19e siècle une série de contes populaires allemands, qu'ils ont publiés sous le titre "Les Contes de Grimm" entre 1812 et 1815.
