Paul Verlaine est né à Metz, le 30 mars 1844. Il mourut à Paris le 8 janvier 1895 après avoir, dans les dernières années de sa vie, erré d'un hôpital à l'autre, en proie aux misères de l'alcool. L'Académie, de son vivant, lui avait refusé une immortalité que ce poète maudit eut bientôt conquise, une fois disparu. Paul Verlaine nous a laissé quelques-uns des poèmes les plus fameux de la littérature française : "Le Colloque sentimental", "Il pleure dans mon cœur", "Chanson d'automne", "Le ciel est par-dessus le toit".
