In June 2025, as a newly grieving widow, Elisa Schetrompf traveled to Israel to participate in a pilgrimage in honor of her late husband. Arriving a week early to reconnect with family she hadn’t seen in over twenty years, her journey of remembrance was suddenly upended when war broke out just two days later. Stranded indefinitely and facing a medical crisis—an urgent need for retina injections to save her sight—she found herself living between the walls of bomb shelters and safe rooms. Yet, amidst the chaos, she began to uncover the deep roots of her Indian-Jewish heritage.

A Daughter’s Kaddish recounts Sarah Birnbach’s year-long odyssey through an unfamiliar world of prayer. To honor her beloved father following his death, Sarah undertakes a Jewish mourning ritual historically reserved for males—despite her father’s request that she hire a male to do so. A novice worshipper and single working mother, Sarah commits to re-citing the Mourner’s Kaddish every morning and evening in the presence of a quorum of ten people (a minyan) in synagogue for eleven months.

When I launched Relief from Grief in 2022, I thought it would be a short-term project. But the feedback was overwhelming:•Grievers found inspiration and comfort.•Listeners who hadn’t experienced loss gained meaningful insights into grief.•Professionals shared how valuable the podcast was for their clients.I realized this podcast was meeting a deep, ongoing need — and I was determined to continue serving that need.I’m honored to partner with Mayrim, an organization dedicated to supporting families who have lost a child. Mayrim is the perfect partner because its founders and members ...

I recently wrote a book called I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me for teens who lost parents. Since its release, I’ve been getting positive feedback from many adults who find it helpful too. Some find it useful because they were children when their parent died; some find it useful in understanding their neighbor or student who is growing up without a parent. All were unanimous that the book was filling an important need: the more I heard, the more it became clear that there is a great need for support for anyone who has suffered a loss. Still, when someone suggested hosting a podcast on this ...
