「十」では主人の苦沙弥の寝起きの悪さの描写から始まる。娘3人が騒々しく顔を洗い学校の支度をしていても、細君が箒とはたきで音を立てながら掃除しても、布団をかぶったまま起きようとしない。裏の車屋の子供の八っちゃんが大きな声で泣き出したので、癇癪を起してやっと起きるが、それでもすぐには布団から離れない。やっと鯨の遠吠えのような声であくびをして顔を洗いに出る。次に子供3人の観察だ。無分別な振る舞いにもてあまし気味だが、絶対的放任主義で何も言わない。やがて、姪の女学生の雪江がやってきた。女二人で姦しく話す話す。保険会社の勧誘への主人の珍応答、八木独仙の婦人会での迷演説の事々。やがて泥棒がつかまって盗品を取りに警察署に行っていた主人が帰ってきて、つまらぬ説教を受ける。そして、生徒の古井武右衛門が苦悶の様子でやってきた。悪友と謀って、あの生意気な金田の娘に悪戯で艶書を送ったはいいが、出し主として自分の名前を貸してしまい、後になってその悪戯で退校になるのではないかと心配になって相談に来たものだった。しかし、苦沙弥はろくに取り合わず、そのうちやってきた寒月君と放談を始めたので、武右衛門は見切りをつけて帰っていった。
