La donna di picche, novella pubblicata nel 1834, è considerato l'opera narrativa più riuscita di Puskin, la cui prosa è caratterizzata da uno stile limpido ed essenziale. Il racconto fonde in maniera originale l'elemento fantastico e il sapore gotico della vicenda riconducibili alla narrativa romantica tedesca con il realismo della rappresentazione di alcuni personaggi, quali la vecchia contessa e la sua sfortunata dama di compagnia.

Questo racconto in stile gotico, reso celebre dal film omonimo, è stato scritto da Washington Irving nel 1819. Questo e il racconto seguente, “Il fidanzato fantasma” , ironizzano sulle superstizioni e sulla credulità popolare, facendo intravedere spiegazioni ben più banali.
