Die Hesselbachs sind vielen erst durch die in den 1950er Jahren erstmals ausgestrahlte Fernsehserie bekannt geworden. Doch die eigentlichen Wurzeln dieser hessischen Familie liegen im Hörfunk. Bereits 1949 wurde die erste Folge "Hesselbachs Ihrn Hausschlüssel" live aufgezeichnet und gesendet. In den folgenden Jahren sind unter dem Titel "Die Familie Hesselbach" weitere 47 Folgen dieser sogenannten Alltagschronik produziert worden. Zwei weitere Staffeln folgten.
