Story49
Over the last 60 years, the Marvel superhero comic books have grown into a gigantic mountain in the middle of contemporary culture. They are the longest continuous, self-contained work of fiction ever created: over half a million pages to date - and growing. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Every schoolchild recognises its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. And not even the people telling the story have read the whole thing - nobody's supposed to. So, of course, that's what Douglas Wolk did.

Story0
Samuel Clemens first encountered the Bermuda Islands in 1867 on a return voyage from the Holy Land and found them much to his liking. One of the most isolated spots in the world, Bermuda offered the writer a refuge from his harried and sometimes sad existence on the mainland, and this island paradise called him back another seven times. Clemens found that Bermuda’s beauty, pace, weather, and company were just the medicine he needed, and its seafaring culture with few connections to the outside world appealed to his love of travel by water.

The book, also known as Darwin's Journal of Researches, is a vivid and exciting travel memoir as well as a detailed scientific field journal covering biology, geology, and anthropology that demonstrates Darwin's keen powers of observation, written at a time when Western Europeans were still discovering and exploring much of the rest of the world. Although Darwin revisited some areas during the expedition, for clarity the chapters of the book are ordered by reference to places and locations rather than chronologically. With hindsight, ideas which Darwin would later develop into his theory of ...

Story0
In August 1913, the Karluk, flagship of Vilhjalmar Stefansson’s Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–16, became trapped in the ice while sailing to Herschel Island near the northern Alaska/Yukon border. After drifting across the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, in January 1914 the ship was crushed by the ice and sank. In the following months, the crew struggled to survive, first on the ice and then on the shores of Wrangell Island. In all, eleven men of the crew of 25 died before rescue. - Summary by Barry Eads

Among the earliest sci-fi books known in English, this account of a trip to the moon was originally published in 1638. The version recorded here is an abridged edition published in 1768. Domingo Gonsales is transported to the moon in a machine carried by a flock of geese—go figure—and meets the race of people who live there, whom he calls the Lunars. After a short stay, his geese bring him back to earth, setting him down in China. The book also recounts several other of Gonsales’ adventures before and after his moon trip. Who knew, when President Kennedy said that Americans would land a ...

Melville wrote of some of his earliest experiences at sea in the story of Wellingborough Redburn, a wet-behind-the-ears youngster whose head was filled with dreams of foreign travel and adventure. In Redburn, the protagonist enlists for a stint as a seaman aboard Highlander, a merchant ship running between New York and London. As with many of Melville's works, this one is as much about class and race as it is about the sea. (Summary by James K. White)

Story0
Join Rachel Vinrace as she sets sail for South America aboard her fathers ship, embarking on a transformative journey of self-discovery akin to a modern mythical adventure. The eclectic mix of passengers serves as a canvas for Virginia Woolf to satirize the quirks of Edwardian society. This novel not only introduces the iconic Clarissa Dalloway, featured in Woolfs later work, Mrs Dalloway, but also includes characters inspired by real-life figures close to Woolf. St John Hirst channels the essence of Lytton Strachey, while Helen Ambrose reflects elements of Woolfs sister, Vanessa Bell. Rachels...
