Der Dreißigjährige Krieg ist in vollem Gange - doch davon ist in der einsamen Moorlandschaft im Hohen Venn nichts zu merken. Ganz im Gegenteil, im Kloster Richwinstein ändert sich nichts an dem Alltag, dem dort schon seit Jahrhunderten nachgegangen wird. Jedenfalls bis plötzlich ein gellender und markerschütternder Schrei zu über das nächtliche Moor hallt. Die beiden Helfer, Gastwirt Peter Lallemagne und sein jüdischer Freund Moyses, sehen nur noch eine im Moor versinkende Hand als sie ankommen. Kurz darauf wird das Kloster von fremden Soldaten gefunden und die bisherige Ruhe in dem Moor ist vorbei.
