Soon after Billy Griffiths joins his first archaeological dig as camp manager and cook, he is hooked. Equipped with a historian’s inquiring mind, he embarks on a journey through time, seeking to understand the extraordinary deep history of the Australian continent. Deep Time Dreaming is the passionate product of that journey. It investigates a twin revolution: the reassertion of Aboriginal identity in the second half of the 20th century and the uncovering of the traces of ancient Australia.

A job as a deckhand on a shark fishing boat in Bass Strait for law student Chris Howse, begets a quest to keep a journal of his dreams as a way of exploring who he is and what he should do and as an antidote to a seemingly lazy zeitgeist. Via the shark boats, the occupation of a barrister at the Victorian Bar and work as a tram conductor in Melbourne (in that order), his dreams lead him to the heart of Aboriginal Australia at the Katherine Regional Aboriginal Legal Aid Service and subsequently to Darwin and the bush courts of the Northern Territory, acting on behalf of the Aboriginal people.
