Set in Hardy's Wessex, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is a moving novel of hypocrisy and double standards. Its challenging sub-title, "A Pure Woman", infuriated critics when the book was first published in 1891, and it was condemned as immoral and pessimistic. The novel tells the story of Tess Durbeyfield, the daughter of a poor and dissipated villager, who learns that she may be descended from the ancient family of d'Urbeville.

Tess has never really been one to go all gooey over babies, but when she discovers this particular little darling in need, she enlists Tony's help to make sure she is well-hidden, and to look for the baby's mother. Meanwhile, Tess' mother has a new boyfriend her father isn't too happy about and Mike has a new murder to solve.

Tony has decided to donate the proceeds from the video game he developed with his friend Shaggy to the White Eagle Animal Shelter. Tess and Brady plan to use the generous donation to expand the facility. Permanent housing for elderly, sick, and other hard-to-place animals is their main focus, but then Brady decides to go all in on the new service dog and search and rescue training facility. Meanwhile, Tess has her feelings hurt when her dad contacts Tony to ask for help tracking down someone from his past, but as they dig deeper, they begin to wonder if the email even is from her dad.

In book 17 of the series, Tess and the entire gang who work and volunteer at the local wild and domestic animal rescue and rehabilitation facility, are up in arms when they find out that the annual fireworks show has been moved to a small lake nestled in the center of a large meadow not all that far from the shelter. Tess tries to explain how setting off explosives of any sort near the shelter will stress out all the animals in their care. She argues that the firework display should be moved back to the larger lake south of town where it has always been held.
