The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture 10,000 years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations: They are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence.

The only choice the denizens of a war-torn Los Angeles have left is to plunge into the deep dark of the metro tunnels and make a new life in the ruins of the subway rails below - with elbow grease, neon, and blood. In the crumbling catacombs beneath Hollywood, an ex-private eye named Jim "Jimbo" Maynard scours the dead, dark underworld for payoff on a gamble gone wrong, but stumbles instead on a subterranean metropolis divided by vice, vendettas, mysteries, and murder plots.

Five hundred years have passed, and Earth is but a distant memory, a story told to children. Bellatrix is humanity’s home now, as well as its future. When the alien race responsible for mankind’s rescue returned, humanity found that its rescue came at a price—it had to serve its alien masters to repay that act, and the Chosen were formed.

In 2025 America, it's hardly news when a renowned octogenarian scientist dying of cancer disappears from a local hospice, but when Kansas City Star reporter Rich Azadian begins to dig, he discovers that other elderly scientists around the world have also vanished recently - all terminally ill and receiving the same experimental treatment from a global health company.

William Ortell, a refugee of the war between gods, finds himself chosen as a successor to a long dead hero of the war. He must decide whether to put aside his grudges or to sink into the comforting stillness he has created for himself. He isn't alone, though. Joining him are scientists, soldiers, magical experts, all with their own stories, all from their own walks of life, and all with their own reasons for fighting. As they are, could they possibly hope to stand against the Soulless? Against the dangers the galaxy holds? Or will they fall just as so many heroes had before them?
