In 1899, publisher Henry Altemus released a series of classic books that were "re-written" using one-syllable words so that the stories would be more accessible. This recording is the Altemus version of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. It is a compelling tale of adventure, courage, ingenuity, and the eternal urge to find a distant land where the perfect life can be built from nothing.

Crusoe, a dog, and two cats survive shipwreck and find themselves on a small island. He adapts to his new surroundings with creativity and perseverance. Several years pass and he manages to befriend a prisoner from the island. Crusoe eventually makes it off of the island though his family believes him already dead. The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. Crusoe set sail from Kingston upon Hull on a sea voyage in August 1651, against the wishes of his parents, who wanted him to pursue a career in law. After a tumultuous journey where his ship is wrecked in a storm, his lust for the sea remains so strong that he sets out to sea again.
