Imagine living in such a cold, desolate but beautiful place as the Arctic. Polar Bear shivers and quivers from the cold wind that blows and snowflakes that melt as they touch his warm nose. What strange creatures Polar Bear sees around him—whales that dive deep into the ocean, penguins that waddle and slip and slide on the ice but can swim like graceful ballerinas under water, brightly colored puffins who can fly and swim under water, the narwhal with its long pointed tusk. There is a lot to learn for a polar bear cub.

Bristle lives in the Alaskan wilderness, just outside of the town of Iceberg. Bristle gets a magical sleep stone for her eighth birthday, which has the power to borrow and give sleep. Although Bristle is warned by her parents to avoid humans, Bristle makes friends with another eight-year-old human girl named Pinga. But when a human boy steals the sleep stone and creates havoc in the town, Bristle and Pinga try to get the sleep stone back.
