Beide erlebten die tiefgreifende Erfahrung von Flucht und Vertreibung. Peggy wurde von ihrer Mutter 1939 auf einem Kindertransport nach Schweden geschickt, um sie vor der NS-Verfolgung zu retten. Umes kam als 13-jähriger unbegleiteter Flüchtling aus Sri Lanka nach Deutschland. Bei beiden verursacht dieses Schicksal viel Leid, aber löst auch den tiefen Wunsch aus, die Welt besser zu machen.
