In 1917, after Arlene Favier’s home burns to the ground, taking her father with it, she must find a way to support her mother and younger brother. If she doesn’t succeed, they will all be impoverished. Job opportunities are scarce, but then a daring possibility arises: the American Women’s Hospital needs ambulance drivers to join a trailblazing, all-female team of doctors and nurses bound for war-torn France.

November, 1914. The Great War has come to Brussels, the Germans have occupied the city, and Edith Cavell, Head Nurse at Berkendael Medical Institute, faces an impossible situation. As matron of a designated Red Cross hospital, Edith has sworn an oath to help any who are wounded, under whatever flag they are found. But Governor von Lüttwitz, the ranking German officer, has additional orders for her. She and her nurses must also stand guard over the wounded Allied prisoners of war and prevent them from escaping.

Olek Kosmen, a young Jewish man hiding in a forest cabin, becomes an unwitting chronicler to one of the Holocaust’s earliest massacres in Lithuania’s Ponary Forest. Eventually captured, Olek is forced into the Nazi “Burning Brigade,” a unit of 80 men tasked with exhuming and incinerating the bodies of Ponary’s victims to erase the evidence. Knowing they’ll be executed once they finish their grisly job, the prisoners’ only hope for survival lies in an audacious escape tunnel they are digging with their bare hands.

German immigrants Karl and Marta Meyer are loyal Americans, especially after a startling visit to see their family during Hitler’s prewar rise to power. When America enters the war, the FBI wrongly arrests the Meyers as spies. Deportation back to war-torn Germany seems their only hope of survival. Their son Hank enlists in the US Army Air Corps, hoping his pay can save the family’s home. After his B-17 is shot down, his ability to speak fluent German helps him evade capture. When the Gestapo is on his trail, his life depends on the daring plan of two unlikely collaborators.
