Liz's son Brent has been deployed to a dangerous place in the Middle East. Recently retired, Liz has promised Brent she will volunteer at Pam's animal shelter, and tries not to worry about him. Then homeless Al rescues a dog he names Max and brings him to Pam's shelter. Liz is convinced no one will ever adopt the little terrier mix because of Max's standoffish attitude and appearance. But there's just something about Max that tugs at Liz's heartstrings. When Brent confronts her via Skype, Liz has to admit it, she's a lot like Max, and that attitude has hindered her own relationships.

It's the 1980s. Max is a 40-something neurosurgeon with a secret: he has discovered a way to induce suicide in laboratory rats. And now he's going to track down the band of Nazis who killed his father, and make them the first human subjects of his new technique. That is, if he is able to navigate his Compulsive Bibliophilia Disorder, which is tearing down his New York City apartment from the inside, his sexual obsession with frizzy-haired, denim-clad student social workers called Arlene....

Max Grund, ein Bürger wie du und ich, fühlt sich nicht mehr wohl im eigenen Land. Vernünftige Diskussionen, vor allem der politische Diskurs, sind in Deutschland unmöglich geworden. Zu oft werden die Menschen belehrt, was sie denken und wie sie leben sollen. Die Leute sind vorsichtig geworden. Ein falsches Wort könnte ihrer Reputation schaden. Für Max Grund als Unternehmer sind es schwere Zeiten. Er macht sich viele Gedanken und sucht vergeblich die geeignete Bühne, auf der er Gesellschaftskritik fair anbringen kann. Im Alltag lehnt sich Max auf gegen eine politische und mediale Belehrung.
