Twelve-year-old Maddie has a quirky sense of humor and loves making her classmates laugh by slapping on fake mustaches every chance she gets. Being funny gets her noticed by class queen Cassie, and things are looking up when Maddie is cast as Juliet in the school play. Maybe Juliet could wear a mustache? When Maddie starts tripping when she walks and her hand starts curling up at her side, her mom takes her to the doctor, who confirms Maddie has a brain tumor. In an instant, her world is turned upside down.

Weekends are usually glorious times for little Maddie. She usually completes her homework on Fridays after she gets home from school so she has a worry-free weekend full of fun and games. Well, this weekend was very different. Maddie spent the whole weekend writing and studying because of a big exam coming up on Monday, and she was stressing out because she felt she wasn't ready, even after days of endless preparation.

A beautiful little girl with a gorgeous, giant afro who loved to do fun things and spend time with her family, Maddie was the perfect picture of the happy African American girl. But all that changed when she started school. Maddie quickly noticed she was different from all the other kids in her class. While she had no difficulty making friends, she had a nagging feeling that she didn't fit in and always felt out of place, and this made her sad and depressed.
