Individual liberty rarely vanishes overnight. It erodes gradually—quietly, incrementally, and often in the name of good intentions. In The Forbidden Idea, Mark A. Monoscalco challenges the assumptions that have shaped modern political and economic thought, arguing that human flourishing depends on unfettered minds and voluntary cooperation—not coercion, central planning, or wealth redistribution.

On Liberty is a philosophical essay by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill. Published in 1859, it applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and state. Mill suggests standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality, which he considers prerequisite to the higher pleasures—the summum bonum of utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill asserts that democratic ideals may result in the tyranny of the majority.

When does liberty matter? It is often thought that personal liberty is always valuable and that it has a unique intrinsic value. In The Limits of Liberty, philosopher Sarah Conly argues that it is much less valuable than traditionally believed. Conly posits that liberties that bring good things have value, but liberties that bring bad consequences have no value. This means that in many cases where liberty has been valued, we are mistaken. Restrictions on certain liberties are more acceptable than commonly thought.

In the tract on Liberty, Mill is advocating the rights of the individual as against Society at the very opening of an era that was rapidly coming to the conclusion that the individual had no absolute rights against Society. The eighteenth century view is that individuals existed first, each with their own special claims and responsibilities: that they deliberately formed a Social State, either by a contract or otherwise, and that then finally they limited their own action out of regard for the interests of the social organism thus arbitrarily produced.

We all learned as children that the founders of our great country threw off the British tyrants in 1776. The revolutionaries then wrote our wonderful Constitution in order to ensure that our liberties would remain free from an oppressive government forever.
